Raw THCA does not get you high. It can’t bind to CB1 receptors in your brain because of an extra carboxyl group in its molecular structure. But apply heat (smoking, vaping, cooking) and THCA loses that group through a process called decarboxylation, converting into Delta-9 THC. At that point, yes, you will feel the full psychoactive effects. The distinction is simple: unheated THCA is non-intoxicating. Heated THCA becomes THC.
What Is THCA?
THCA (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid) is a cannabinoid found in raw cannabis and hemp plants. It’s the chemical precursor to THC. Every cannabis plant starts by producing THCA, not THC. THC only appears later, when heat gets involved.
Structurally, THCA and THC are almost identical. The one difference: THCA carries an extra carboxylic acid group attached to its molecule. That extra group is the reason THCA can’t fit into your brain’s CB1 receptors properly. And CB1 receptor activation is what causes the “high” feeling.
A 2017 study by Nadal et al., published in Biochemical Pharmacology, confirmed that THCA has poor affinity for CB1 and CB2 receptors in its acidic form. So raw THCA interacts with your body through multiple pathways (primarily PPARgamma receptors and TRPM8 ion channels), which is why researchers treat it as a distinct compound with its own potential benefits.

How decarboxylation turns THCA into THC
Decarboxylation sounds technical, but the concept is simple. Heat strips the carboxylic acid group from THCA’s molecular structure. What’s left is THC.
This happens at temperatures between 200 and 245 degrees Fahrenheit. In practice, that means any time you light a joint, hit a vape pen, or put cannabis in an oven for edibles, you’re decarboxylating THCA into THC.
The reaction is fast. When you smoke or vape, conversion happens almost instantly as the flame or heating element contacts the flower. By the time the vapor reaches your lungs, you’re inhaling THC.
For edibles, the process takes longer. If you’re decarbing flower in an oven, 30 to 40 minutes at around 220°F is the standard range. Go too hot or too long and you’ll start degrading the cannabinoids and terpenes, which kills potency and flavor.
The key point: THCA doesn’t convert to THC inside your body. Research confirms this. If you eat raw THCA flower or swallow an unheated tincture, the compound passes through your system as THCA, with no psychoactive effects.
When THCA gets you high
Three consumption methods trigger decarboxylation and produce a THC high:
Smoking. Light a joint, pack a bowl, or load a bong with THCA flower. The flame decarboxylates the THCA instantly. Effects hit within minutes and typically last 1 to 3 hours. Smoked THCA flower produces the same effects as traditional THC flower. If the THCA content is 25%, expect roughly 25% THC potency after combustion.
Vaping. THCA vape cartridges and disposables heat the concentrate to a lower temperature than smoking. This preserves more terpenes (which affects flavor and the overall experience) while still fully converting THCA to THC. Effects are similar to smoking but often described as smoother.
Edibles and cooking. When THCA flower is heated in an oven and then infused into butter or oil, it converts to THC. Cannabis edibles take 45 to 90 minutes to kick in because your digestive system processes the THC before it reaches your bloodstream. The trade-off: the high tends to be stronger and can last 4 to 8 hours depending on the dose.
When THCA does NOT get you high
If no heat is applied, THCA stays non-intoxicating. This includes:
Raw cannabis juicing. Some wellness-focused consumers blend raw cannabis leaves and buds into smoothies. You get THCA and other raw cannabinoids, but zero psychoactive effects.
Unheated tinctures. If a tincture is made without a decarboxylation step, the THCA remains in its acidic form.
Raw flower that you don’t smoke. Buying THCA flower and simply holding it, storing it, or using it topically won’t produce a high. Light and time can slowly convert small amounts of THCA to THC (which is why old flower sometimes tests higher for THC), but this ambient conversion is minimal.
What the science says about raw THCA benefits
THCA may have its own value even without the high. Early research is promising, though limited. Here’s what the studies actually show:
Anti-inflammatory activity. A 2020 study found THCA reduced inflammation markers in cell and animal models, particularly through CB2 receptor pathways.
Neuroprotective potential. A 2017 study published in the British Journal of Pharmacology showed THCA activated PPARgamma receptors, which helped protect brain cells in a Huntington’s disease model.
Antiemetic effects. A 2022 study found THCA showed anti-nausea and anticonvulsant potential, particularly when stabilized and combined with other cannabinoids.
A word of caution: these are lab and animal studies, not large clinical trials in humans. The results are encouraging, but we’re early. Don’t treat THCA as a proven treatment for any condition.
Will THCA show up on a drug test?
This depends entirely on whether you heated it.
If you consumed raw THCA (unheated tincture, raw juice), your body processes it as THCA, not THC. Standard urine tests look for THC-COOH, a metabolite of THC. Raw THCA consumption is unlikely to trigger a positive result at the standard 50 ng/ml cutoff.
If you smoked, vaped, or ate decarbed THCA, you consumed THC. Your body will produce THC-COOH. You will likely test positive.
The gray area: some “THCA” products contain small amounts of THC already (from partial decarboxylation during processing or storage). If you’re subject to drug testing, assume any THCA product that’s been heated carries the same test risk as THC.

Is THCA legal?
Under the 2018 Farm Bill, hemp-derived THCA is federally legal if the product contains less than 0.3% Delta-9 THC by dry weight. Since THCA itself is not Delta-9 THC, products with high THCA percentages can technically comply with the federal limit.
But here’s the catch: once you apply heat, that THCA converts to THC. Buying a legal THCA product and smoking it produces a THC experience that may not be legal under your state’s cannabis laws.
State regulations are all over the map. Some states (like Georgia) count THCA toward total THC concentration. California recently banned hemp-derived intoxicating cannabinoids, including THCA. Other states like New York allow THCA sales as long as the total THC stays under 0.3% at the point of sale.

Common questions about THCA and getting high
Does THCA get you as high as Delta-9 THC? When you smoke or vape THCA flower, it converts to Delta-9 THC during combustion. So yes, the high is the same. A joint of 25% THCA flower produces essentially the same experience as a joint of 25% THC flower.
Can you get high from THCA edibles? Yes, if the edibles were made with decarboxylated THCA. The heating step during preparation converts the THCA to THC. THCA gummies that have gone through this process will produce psychoactive effects.
